A Brief Introduction to Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is nothing new but ancient & enduring harvest of nature’s richness.

Humans throughout time have cultivated the use of plant essences to affect scents in order to heal, uplift & communicate. Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, went so far that she had the sails of her ship soaked in rose essence so that the wind would gently waft the sultry scent to announce to her lover that she was about to arrive.

In nature, scents play a major role in the survival of a species-animals use aroma as a communication method. You may be aware that the ant will mark his trail by leaving a very minute amount of pheromone for other ants to follow to signal a new discovery of food.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to heal the body & mind. Essential oils are the essences extracted from trees, shrubs, flowers, herbs & grasses. Currently used in hospitals in Europe & especially France, aromatherapy is a division of natural alternative medicines.

In aromatherapy, there are two basic ways in which essential oils have an effect on upon the body: 1) through the nose, and 2) through the skin. When we inhale, the aroma molecules hits receptors that sit in the nasal cavity. These receptors (called olfactory bulbs) are actually a part of our brains. This gives us a direct & quick access to the brain through aroma. The part of the brain that most directly responds to olfactory stimulus is the limbic system, which corresponds to our feelings, memories, & emotions. The limbic system is the most ancient part of the brain evolutionary speaking. When aromatic messages hit it they are processed instantly & instinctively. This is why they are so powerful.

When applied to the skin, essential oils permeate through the capillaries and cell tissues. All essential oils help to balance emotions to some degree and are known for their stimulating and uplifting and relaxing properties. On the intellectual level, they can revive a tired mind and stimulate memory. All essential oils appear to be antiseptic and anti-bacterial which helps in the treatment of viral infections. And further, all essential oils have the ability to reduce stress, stimulate sluggish circulation and boost the immune system.
